Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis is a spinal deformity characterized not only by a lateral curvature greater than 10 degrees but also by a rotational component of 4 degrees or more, which causes the vertebrae and rib cage to twist. It can develop at any age, though it is most commonly diagnosed during adolescence. The severity varies—some cases require observation, while others benefit from structured therapy or, in rare cases, surgery.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • Visible lateral curvature of the spine
  • Rib hump or prominence due to vertebral rotation
  • One side of the back or ribs appearing more raised or prominent • Back pain or discomfort
  • Difficulty breathing in severe thoracic curves
  • Uneven waist or posture

Causes of Scoliosis

The exact cause of scoliosis is not always known. Major contributing factors include:

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis (Most common form – approx. 80–85%): Occurs without a known cause and is most often seen in adolescents. Genetics plays a key role.
  • Neuromuscular Condition (e.g., cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy)
  • Congenital Spine Deformities: Vertebral anomalies present at birth.
  • Injury, Trauma, or Spine Infections

At Mirdif Center for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, we provide a holistic and evidence-based approach to scoliosis management. Our treatment aims to improve spinal alignment, reduce pain, and enhance functional capacity.

Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Comprehensive physical examination
  • Postural and movement analysis
  • Measurement of spinal curvature (Cobb angle) and rotation
  • X-ray or imaging referrals

Based on the assessment, our expert physiotherapists will design a personalized treatment program, which may include:

  • Physiotherapy & Manual Therapy
    Gentle spinal techniques including:
    • 3D spinal mobilization (addressing lateral deviation + rotation + sagittal alignment)
    • Soft tissue release for tight paraspinal and thoracic muscles
    • Myofascial release to restore mobility and reduce discomfort
  • Schroth Method Exercises
A specialized 3D approach designed to correct spinal imbalance through:
    • De-rotation
    • Elongation
    • Stabilization
    • Specific breathing techniques to improve rib cage symmetry
  • Postural Correction & Core Strengthening
Strengthening deep core muscles, gluteals, and postural stabilizers to support spinal alignment and prevent progression.
  • Pain Management Techniques
Soft tissue therapy, gentle traction, electrotherapy modalities, and myofascial release for pain reduction.
  • Bracing Consultation
For moderate scoliosis cases, we provide guidance on appropriate braces (when indicated) to slow curve progression.
  • Lifestyle & Ergonomic Advice
Recommendations for daily activities, workstation setup, and corrections during rest periods (dinlenme zamanlarındaki düzenlemeler) to support spine health.

Our team offers specialized scoliosis therapy tailored to each patient, using advanced methods such as Schroth and 3D manual mobilization to achieve optimal outcomes.
