Activities to help toddlers / children with walking

    • Standing with / without support reaching toys in different directions
    • Step standing (one foot on step / large book) with / without support reaching for toys in different directions
      • Throw / catch ball
      • Walk on knees / carry toy, make a game to get from one side of room to other.
        • Pushing large ball (with someone holding it)with 2 legs (stick foot prints on the ball so know where to place and make more fun)
        • Bridging (lifting bottom up whilst knees are bent and feet are flat on floor). Make it fun by passing toys / cars under the tunnel.
        • Open / close legs (kicking away balls / kicking noisey toys)

          1- Leg / tummy strengthening exercises in lying – kicking legs with knees straight / knees bent (can kick toys that make noises like bells, rattles etc or kick your hands)

        2- High kneeling / Half kneeling (alternate legs) – reaching for toys in different directions

      3- Sit to stand with / without support and Pull to stand

      Put toys on higher surfaces like table / sofa to encourage child to stand up.

      4- Balance activities in Standing                          

    5- Cruising / Sidestepping with / without support –

    Stepping over steps, uneven surfaces, cushions (place toys at other end of sofas / table so child motivated to move)

    6- Walking practice                                                    

    With support at hips or trunk or two hands or one hand depending  on ability

    • Pushing trolley, chair, box
    • Walking supported with scarf or tie or band
    • Walking holding large hoop / stick (with someone holding opposite end)
    • Walking over obstacles, steps, uneven surfaces, sand, ramps, outside terrain (place toys along the floor, at distances away so child motivated to move, incorporate games where have to pick objects on way or come back to start to collect and take back)

    7- Walk with barefoot to feel surfaces / increase sensory experience

    8- Walk with supportive boots / shoes if your child has hypermobility or loose joints, low tone so the ankles are more stable or for practice in outside terrain

    9- AVOID BABY TYPE WALKERS, USE JUMPERS SPARINGLY
